 Course Syllabus 10th Syllabus 14-15.MRHS

PBS! Mature, Respectful, Honest, Safe!

Absences and Make-Up Assignments:

  • It is your responsibility to get work missed due to an unexcused absence. Per Superintendent Policy, when you have an excused absence, you have the same number of days you were absent plus one to make up a practice or assessment.
  • If the deadline or assessment date was made known to the class before you were absent, it is expected that you still meet the deadline, take the assessment on the planned date, or due upon return.
  • Make-Up work can be found on our class website: https://silvaenglish10.wordpress.com/
  • You are expected to use the class website. I post all the information you will need. If you are absent check the website first. It is your responsibility to get your missing work when you are absent. If you have any additional questions after checking the website, please arrange a time to meet with me.

Multiple Opportunities:

  • Some assignments will be open for a multiple opportunity. If I am offering a multiple opportunity, I will clearly inform students of the date of the multiple opportunity and post it on my website.
  • Late work and make-up assignments will not be accepted once a unit is complete. Also, feedback or re-writes may not be provided on assignments or assessments turned in late.
  • Many assignments are looped, meaning we will revisit that standard at a later time, and a multiple opportunity might not be available. These types of assignments will be trended, and you will notified how I will be trending (frequent scores, average scores, or highest score).

Assignment Due Dates:

  • All assignments will be posted on my blog and on the whiteboard in the classroom prior to due dates.
  • Twitter reminders of assessments will be tweeted out occasionally along with Remind101 updates. See the following link for more information: https://silvaenglish10.wordpress.com/remind101-twitter/
  • ALL FORMAL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TYPED AND IN MLA FORMAT.
  • Any plagiarism will result in a zero for the plagiarized assignment!

Student ID’s:

  • You must wear your ID at all times. If you do not have an ID, you will be issued a temporary ID during your first hour or will be required to purchase a new ID after 3 temps.
  • This is a school policy which is strictly enforced. Lack of wearing an ID during my class will result in loss of privileges or detention.

Tardies:

  • You will be allowed two unexcused tardies each semester. Following the third tardy, your parent/guardian will be notified, and you will be assigned detention during your off period.
  • If the dentition is not served, you will be referred to the Dean’s Office.

Guest Teacher (substitute):

  • A negative report from a guest teacher will result in a detention. Based on severity, the consequences (referral or number of detentions) will vary.

Electronic Devices:

  • Use of cell phones is prohibited during class. If you do not respect this policy your phone will be subject to confiscation of your device.
  • The same goes for MP3 players and IPods; however, there will be times in class when devices will be permitted. Those privileges have to be earned.

Chromebook Usage:

  • Each MRHS English classroom is equipped with a cart of 35 brand new Chromebook laptop computers. These laptops are considerably more powerful and durable than what has been available to you in the past. It is our joint responsibility to care for these laptops and to report all issues of malfunction or abuse. Terms of usage are as follows:
  1. Each student will be assigned a specific computer number. You are to use this laptop all year unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
  2. At the end of any class period where Chromebooks are being used, students will return their laptop to its appropriately numbered slot in the cart and plug in its power supply.
  3. If a student notices that his or her Chromebook is damaged, it is that student’s responsibility to immediately notify the classroom teacher.
  4. Any student who intentionally alters, defaces, or otherwise damages Chromebook laptops will be subject to disciplinary referral, payment of the costs to repair or replace the Chromebook, and, if warranted, referral to law enforcement.

Keys to Success

  1. Show up. Your presence in class every day is essential to your success. If you know you will be absent in advance, let me know and I will provide you with the work you will miss.
  2. Be prepared. Come to class with the necessary materials needed to be successful, every day. A writing utensil, writer’s notebook, your ID, and your independent reading novel. When the bell rings, be in your seat ready to begin class. No backpacks or purses on desks during class.
  3. Stay on task. There will always be something for you to do in class.
  4. Get help- sooner rather than later. See me for help during access time or I am available by appointment during my off periods.
  5. Have fun! Smile too J
